Finn's FAQ's: Architectural Elements

View all blog posts

Kicking off a new FAQ series by our very own resident pup, Finn. We often get a lot of questions about our specialty millwork capabilities, or what we call Architectural Elements. Finn breaks down the most common questions about how to work with Icon Modern for these types of projects.

What types of architectural elements do you typically fabricate?
Space dividers, hanging canopies and ceiling elements, shelving, laser cut or CNC’d signage, feature walls and planters. Have a different idea? Reach out to our sales team - we love a good design challenge (and gets my tail wagging)!

How do I specify Icon Modern for a project?
Whether you have a fully engineered idea or just a sketch, reach out to our sales team to discuss your project. We can verify feasibility, get you a rough budget and even deliver samples. Being a dog, I am unable to write but someone on our sales team will help you write the specification to include in your drawing package.

What are your steel fabrication capabilities?
We have in-house powdercoating which allows us to powdercoat steel in almost any color. Our laser cutting capabilities give you endless possibilities for custom patterns on signage, space dividers and feature walls. We can laser cut or bend custom shapes and dimensions too.

Are you considered a millworker?
While we make specialty millwork pieces, or what we call Architectural Elements, we are not a traditional millworker.
Fun fact: we very often partner with millworkers, providing services that fall outside of their core capabilities. When you include Icon Modern in a drawing set, millworkers and general contractors will reach out to us to partner.

What don’t you do?
Custom wood paneling, cabinetry, plastic laminate casework, custom doors, custom molding & trim, built-in shelving. Unsure? Reach out to us! Happy to steer you in the right direction.

Do you provide drawings?
Yes. Once your order is placed, we provide fully engineered shop drawings and samples for approval.

Do you install?
We partner with experienced third party installers. Our project managers maintain close communication with our installers to ensure accuracy of installation.

Can you do specialty millwork projects outside of your hometown of Chicago, IL?
It depends. There are some more complex projects which aren’t easily executed remotely. Most projects like hanging ceiling elements, space dividers or planters can be done successfully. Please reach out to us and we can determine what works best for your project.

Do you ship nationwide?
Yes, within the 48 contiguous states.

What is the typical process for an Architectural Elements project?

We offer full project management services from start to finish. Once your order is placed, a dedicated project manager oversees your project until completion. Our process includes samples, shop drawings, local site-visits, fabrication, delivery and installation.

What are your standard lead times for these types of projects?
Our typical lead time is 6-8 weeks. For large-scale, more complex projects, the lead time can be more. Reach out as early as possible so we can ensure an efficient timeline! Woof. :)
